UPDATE: Earlier today, a reader asked about support for Blackmagic RAW, a proprietary format developed  by Blackmagic Design for some of their cameras.. I did some checking and found that, last year, Apple introduced Media Extensions, an OS-level feature that lets camera makers add support for their codec in FCP, Motion, Compressor, QuickTime Player, etc.

BMD is working on an extension, I’ve been told, but there’s no scheduled release date. However, FCP.Cafe provides the BRAW Toolbox extension which allows importing Blackmagic RAW files without transcoding. Link: https://brawtoolbox.fcp.cafe/

It is also worth noting that just this month Sony released a new Media Extension for Sony X-OCN files from cameras like the Sony Venice and the Sony PMW-F55. The free download is available here: https://nablet.com/media-extension-plugins

APPLE MOTION v5.11

Motion 5.11 introduces support for Apple Log 2 video, providing even greater dynamic range and even wider color gamut of Apple Log 2 video.

In Compressor (or FCP) does “and other RAW formats” include Blackmagic RAW?

  2. Warren Nelson says:

    What? Firewire is gone? 🙂

I still have Firewire to USB adapter. I have no Firewire gear.

    Guess I retire that adapter!

Thanks again for all your great work keeping us informed, especially us geezers who remember 2″ videotape.

  3. Caesar Darias says:

Will Apple ever adopt text-based editing? It would be especially helpful for ENG work because you’re constantly screening/logging interviews while working on deadline. And why don’t they have a larger selection of professional and customizable lower thirds?

  4. Geoff. says:

Loss of firewire very disappointing, how do we cope with DV and HDV archive clips. Apple should rethink!

    • Larry says:

      Geoff:

Apple told us this was coming. Time to transfer your DV / HDV clips to ProRes to archive them. OR, keep older gear around so you can access them in the future. Keep in mind that the lifespan of tape is 20-25 years, more is possible, but care is needed.

  5. Brad Bradley says:

Will firewire capture be available in iMovie?

  6. Carsten says:

Another option to work with BRAW (and also Raw Formats from other camera brands) in Final Cut is Transcoder 2 from Color Finale.

  7. While BRAW Toolbox does allow for use of BRAW clips inside FCP, it wasn’t built using the newer “media extension” feature of macOS.

    Per the BRAW Toolbox FAQ:
“Because Final Cut Pro’s decode API is private – we had to just make do with the two public API’s we had access to – Workflow Extensions and FxPlug4.”

  8. The loss of FireWire is crazy as the hardware still supports it. I have transferred my FireWire devices to my 2012 Mac Mini which has a FireWire 800 port. I capture tape with Apple’s Movie Player. It captures the whole tape instead of Final Cut’s every time the camera was paused into separate files.

I use VueScan on my Nikon Coolscan FireWire film scanner.

I started using FireWire in 1995 with my Sony VX1000 MiniDV camera. Shortly there after Apple added it to the Mac. From then on I had direct Digital transfers of my footage or lossless copies.
