Larry, you do not need to create a compound clip in order to have a clip start at a different frame in the drop zone. All you need to do is click the drop zone first, then in the Browser, skim to the frame that you want to be the first frame in the drop zone, and click.

An important note is to select clips in the Browser, not timeline.
