Mark Levinson asks:

Like everyone else who writes, I am amazed and grateful for your knowledge and dedication. I have a question about a feature that would seem so useful, it’s astounding that the answer is either so obscure, or doesn’t exist. What I would like to do is change the name of a clip in a sequence in the Timeline without having to change the original source file.

Especially with a documentary when there may be many clips from one interview in different places, it would be extremely useful to be able to see at a glance what “was said” in a particular clip in the Timeline instead of seeing everything labeled “Paul Interview.”

But the only way I can figure out how to do this is to make the clip independent and then rename – which breaks the connection to master clip and uses the new name in the media source file.

Larry replies: Mark, thanks for writing… and the kind words.

Making a clip independent is one way to do this. Another, which may be easier, is to use subclips (which I wrote about last month).
