Templates are simply customized project files for Premiere or Audition that are saved to a specific location, then accessed whenever you create a new project. Because these are full-fledged projects, they can significantly speed your workflow when you are creating the same type of projects over and over.
For example, at the NAB Show New York, I was recording a series of 35 ten-minute interviews in a day and a half using Adobe Audition. While the content was different for each interview, the project setup was the same. By using a template, I could close the existing interview and create a new one in less than a minute, with all tracks labeled, all inputs set and all effects applied.
Templates can include:
… basically, if you can create or add it to a project, you can save it as a template.
Here’s how.
CREATE A PREMIERE TEMPLATE
Create a new Premiere project and organize it exactly the way you want the template to appear. This includes naming bins, importing common media, creating empty sequences… whatever you need.
Choose File > Save as Template. In the resulting dialog, give the template a name. Click Save, then close that project.
To access that template, create a new project, then choose that template from the Project Template menu (upper red arrow).
If you want to see where templates are stored, choose Open templates folder at the bottom of this menu.
CREATE A TEMPLATE FOR AUDITION
Creating templates for Audition is similar.
Here’s the Audition template I created for my NAB interviews. Tracks were labeled, inputs were set, track effects applied, and unneeded tracks were deleted.
Once you have the template created – choose File > Export > Session as Template.
Give this file the name you want to use for the template and click OK. Then, close this project.
To access a template, create a new project, then choose the template you want to use from the Template menu (red arrow)
NOTE: The default location for all Audition templates is set in Preferences > Media & Cache. You can change this to whatever location you want.
If you create the same projects over and over, templates will save you a ton of time. I use them constantly.
