How To Archive Apple Motion & Compressor

This was taken from a recently published Apple KnowledgeBase article.

To back up the currently installed Motion application:

  1. Create a new folder in the Applications folder, and name it after the application (for example, “Motion 5.2.3”). To check your version of Motion, open the application and choose About Motion from the Motion menu.
  2. Select the Motion application in the Applications folder. Choose File > Compress “Motion.” It will take a few minutes to compress.
  3. Move the resulting “Motion.zip” file into the folder you created in step 1.
  4. Move the folder containing the .zip file to a backup drive.

This same technique also works for Compressor.

  1. Mark Spencer says:

It works for FCP X as well, I do it regularly, and have rolled back to earlier versions when I had clients who were on earlier versions.

  2. Yes this works well for FCPX updates. I do it each time I update FCPX.

One sensible addition to this step is to duplicate your library before you open it with the new version of FCPX. When you open your library with the new version of FCPX it will ask you if you want to update your library for the current version of FCPX. Once you do this I am not aware of anyway you can go back. If you then find you have a problem you can open your saved library which will continue to work with the old zipped version of FCPX.
