TRAINING DESCRIPTION
This video training is different from most of our other webinars. Rather than look at a particular aspect of technology, this examines how the craft of editing helps tell a story. In fact, in this webinar, the specific editing software you are using doesn’t matter at all.
All too often, when you ask an editor why they picked a particular shot or sound bite, they will tell you that âit just felt right.â While true, that doesn’t help other editors figure out how to improve their story-telling skills. In this video training, follow along with host Larry Jordan as he edits three different styles of video – montage, interview and dramatic – and shows how to:
- Tell a story using images and music
- Determine whether to edit music first or last
- Determine whether to use cuts or dissolves for a montage
- Create a dialog when nothing is being said
- Listen to an interview to figure out what portions to use
- Discover the importance of pacing in an interview
- Determine the beginning and end of a story
- Determine which shots work best in the middle of a story
- Establish who is the focus of a scene
- Understand the importance of editing audio and video separately
- Emphasize the emotion of a scene
In this session, Larry illustrates how he reviews clips and decides how to use them to tell a story. Along the way, he provides a series of editing tips and suggestions designed to enhance your story-telling skills by showing where and when to cut. Every editor has their own style and any scene can be cut multiple ways. But, if you are interested in learning more about the craft of editing, or improving your own skills, this webinar is not to be missed!
AUDIENCE LEVEL
This beginning-level training doesn’t require any editing software knowledge at all. This session illustrates how to use moving images to tell stories, which is relevant to any software running on any platform. (This training is a QuickTime movie. You don’t need to own any other software to watch this.)
BONUS FEATURE!
To help you quickly find the information you need, we also included chapter markers in the QuickTime movie for easy navigation. Click here to learn how to display them in your download.
