TRAINING DESCRIPTION

This session is different from most of our events. Here, I show how I cut an interview featuring a guest, B-roll, and titles. Along the way, I’ll provide tips that can help you become a faster editor, but this session looks more at story-building than technology.

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Vint Cerf, one of the pioneer scientists of the Internet, and we got to talking about the “interstellar Internet;” specifically, how JPL was modifying the Internet to support missions to Mars. I thought that would be a fun interview to edit this week using Final Cut Pro X.

I start by reviewing the clips, marking them with keywords and favorites, and deciding the best shot order. After that, I edit the clips to the Timeline using the mouse, buttons, and keyboard shortcuts. Followed by trimming edit points using both the Precision Editor and manual adjustments. Next is adding B-roll featuring NASA movies, and transitions. At the end, we wrap this into a nice package using some of the built-in titles from Final Cut Pro X.

If you are looking to pickup proven technique to edit interviews quickly and easily, this is one session you need to see! In this video tutorial, you will learn how to:

  • Review, track, locate and mark clips
  • Create a radio cut, without worrying about jump cuts
  • Trim the edit point, where two clips touch
  • Add and modify B-roll footage to illustrate the guest’s talking points
  • Add and modify a locator and lower-third title
