Customize Your Playback Settings

To review your edit in FCP X, there are a lot more options than just pressing the Spacebar. They are found in View > Playback.

Consider Play to End. (Shortcut: Shift + Control + O). This plays to the end of the selected range, clip or clips. This works best when playing a selected range or region.
