Copy Files From an iPhone to a Mac – FAST! [v]

Posted on by Larry

[This is an excerpt from a recent on-line video webinar: “The Basics of Editing in Adobe Premiere Pro” which is available as a download in our store, or as part of our Video Training Library.]

UPDATE: After creating this tutorial, I discovered another and, often, better way to transfer files. Check out this tutorial on using Image Capture to transfer files. Then, use the technique you like the best.

EXCERPT DESCRIPTION

In this short video excerpt, Larry demonstrates a very fast technique to copy files from an iPhone to a Mac.

    Thanks for this tip, Larry!

Is there any quality difference between using this method versus using Airdrop between devices?

    Thanks.

    Bob

    Thank you

You can also transfer mov files from iPhone to Mac without needing to use a cable, using the AirDrop app in both devices. Have to open AirDrop on both the Mac and the phone. AirDrop is in the drop down window under GO on the Mac. (This may only work with iPhones.) Then find AirDrop in Settings of the iPhone, the to General, and make sure that AirDrop is turned on.

Then select the file in the phone and prompt it to select the Mac icon in the AirDrop window. It will transfer to your Downloads folder…kinda slow but does happen.

Hi Larry, I think there’s a mix up here. The link promises Copy Files From an iPhone to a Mac – FAST!” but goes to the outline of your excellent series on Premiere. (I’m enjoying that on Wednesdays)
    Cheers,

My mistake! I didn’t actually watch the video clip. My apologies.

  8. Warren Nelson says:

    That’s great!

However, I frequently have to ask non-tech (video or computer!) folk to “send” me material shot on their smartphones (and I’ve given up trying to get landscape mode clip…sigh).

If you want make a hit, create a quick video on how to transfer files from your phone to your computer, both iOS and Android and PC and Mac (4 combinations by my count). Or, show how to send those clips via the interwebs without destroying data caps directly from your iOS or Android device.

Then add instructions on how to transfer multi-hundred MB clips via the internet. Email doesn’t work, uploading to Google Drive or Dropbox requires someone to actually know how to use those tools, and the various “free transfer” products are also challenging to find and use.

It is a freakin’ nightmare! LOLOL Help!

If anybody can do it, you can! (Sorry about the manipulation, but I couldn’t help myself! I’m frantic! LOLOL)

      Warren:

You are correct – this is a HUGE issue. And far more complex than a single article. You have my sympathies. There are three key steps:

      1. Getting the images/video off your device
      2. Zipping the file
      3. Transferring the file

Computers are easier than mobile devices. And, since I don’t own an Android device, I’m not the best person to write about it. The first two are easy to cover and I’ve written about them – at least for iOS and Mac systems. Zipping is also easy.

But the transfer method needs to be answered by each production house. There are dozens of options, and not all companies will have all of them. So, you’ll need to write training for the system you prefer to use.

Where is the tutorial for transferring files?

  10. Paul says:

Great tip! Thank you. Didn’t know that and now plan to use it.
