Recently, Apple revived software certification for Final Cut Pro editors by partnering with Future Media Concepts (FMC) to create three different certification exams.
Editing today often tends to be free-lance, which means that editors are competing for every job they get. Certification is yet another “bragging right” to help differentiate yourself from other editors. While it can’t prove that you know how to tell a story, it does prove that you know how to use the software.
While software training is available from a number of sources, including my website, certification exams are only available from FMC. There are three exams, depending upon the level of mastery you want to display. You can pick which exam you want to take, you don’t need to take them in order.
SOCIAL PRO
Cost: $149 (includes an exam resource guide)
This exam focuses on the creation of online content for social media. Targeted at students and professionals looking to get started in the Final Cut Pro ecosystem. It tests principle features in Final Cut at an introductory to intermediate level; including integrating iPhone video into the editing process.
VIDEO PRO
Cost: $149 (includes an exam resource guide)
This exam focuses on creating professional-grade content for film, television, advertising and business. This exam covers all areas of Final Cut at an intermediate to advanced level, including importing, editing and exporting high-quality video.
POST-PRODUCTION PRO
Cost: $149 (includes an exam resource guide)
This exam focuses on all areas of Final Cut at the expert level and includes questions on Motion and Compressor, as well as post-production terminology and concepts.
SUMMARY
Successfully passing an exam (Apple has traditionally used 80% as a passing grade) entitles you to a printable certificate, digital certification badge, listing on an online database of graduates … and bragging rights.
