This morning AMD announced major updates to its Radeon software, which is the engine behind all AMD graphics processor cards and chips, with a focus on new technology to support gamers and Virtual Reality (VR). AMD describes their latest release as “enabling high-performance gaming, professional grade stability and engaging VR experiences.”

At the same time, the Fire Pro GPU line, which is found in Apple’s new Mac Pro, is being rebranded as the Radeon Pro, because of the higher brand-awareness of the Radeon name.

For designers, content creators, and game developers, Radeon Pro Software Crimson ReLive Edition delivers “outstanding productivity and stability with up to 30 percent performance improvements in key applications and undergoing twice the OEM platform testing, three times more ISV certification testing and 1.5 times more stress testing than the previous AMD professional graphics driver;” according to the AME press release.

As AMD said during its press briefing: “We used to differentiate between hobbyists and pros. What we are seeing is a market shift where even hobbyists are demanding professional tools. So we are focusing on people who are creators, rather than pro vs. hobbyist.”

During their press briefing, AMD stressed significant performance improvements, stability improvements and extensive quality control testing, and support by a broad range of AMD and 3rd-party software.

There are two levels to this release: Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition and Radeon Pro Software Crimson ReLive Edition; both are software-only and both build on the Crimson Edition software that AMD released in 2015. The base level is geared toward gamers, while the pro level is targeted at developers.

Noticeably absent from this announcement was anything from or about Apple as to whether or when they would support this update.

Both versions are free and available for download today.
