Have you ever wondered how many monitors your Mac will support? And, if so, have you then discovered it’s almost impossible to find out? Or, worse, purchased a monitor only to discover it doesn’t really look that great?
That was the problem Parish had, as he explained to me in an email.
I didn’t set out to build a website. I set out to buy a monitor. Two, actually.
In 2023 I bought a 24-inch iMac. The M3 with four Thunderbolt ports. The plan was simple: keep the iMac in the middle and put an external monitor on each side. A clean three-screen setup. I’d wanted one for years.
So I bought the two monitors. Plugged the first one in, perfect. Plugged the second one in, nothing. I checked the cables. Swapped the ports. Updated macOS. Tried every combination I could think of. Still nothing.
Then I found the answer, buried in a spec footnote: the base M3 chip drives exactly one external display. It doesn’t matter how many ports the iMac has, and it doesn’t matter how good the monitors are. The limit isn’t the monitor. It’s the silicon. Four ports, one display.
I had spent money on a second monitor my computer could never use.
What bothered me more than the wasted purchase was how hard that fact was to find. I’ve been a software developer for 12 years, and even I had to dig through forums, spec sheets, and half-right blog posts just to answer a basic question: how many displays can my Mac actually run? If it was that confusing for me, it was hopeless for someone buying their first Mac.
Building small tools to answer annoying questions is basically my whole career. So I built one. A little calculator that tells you exactly how many external displays your specific Mac supports, and at what resolution.
That tool kept growing. People started asking which monitors were actually good for a Mac, which ones hit Retina density, which ones could charge the laptop over a single cable. So I began reviewing those too.
That’s how RetinaDesk happened. It started with me being annoyed at my own iMac, and turned into a whole site for figuring out Mac monitors. So nobody else buys the one their computer can’t run.
The website is free, collects no personal data and is extremely useful!

An excellent and well designed resource!. I would only add that one can side-step the monitor limitation on a given Mac by using a DisplayLink adapter or hub. This is how I was able to use my M1 13-inch MBP with 2 external monitors with no issues.

It’s been 1-1/2-2-years since the nonprofit I work for supplied a bunch of Lenovo ThinkVision monitors for everyone. (USB C) I hooked one up to my MacBook Pro (2023 M2 Max, 64GB), they looked great!. Final Cut Pro immediately developed anomalies- when I finally figured out that it was the monitor, I had to disconnect it… It would be great to have an extra monitor. Thanks for the link! Although the tool seems useful, the article somewhat exaggerates the problem. Information about monitor compatibility for Macs is usually available in Apple’s official documentation. In addition, the example presented is based on a personal experience, so it does not necessarily reflect the situation of all users. The website may save time, but it is important to verify the information with official sources before making a purchasing decision.:)

Thanks for your comment. As the website makes clear, they get their information from Apple sources, as well. The challenge is that finding that information from Apple is not as easy as it could be. This website attempts to consolidate it into one easy-to-use web page.

Excellent idea. Apple should have created this easy mix and match tool a long time ago.
I hope he will include a list of Macs compatible with the Apple 30” Cinema Display, which many of us would like to use with newer Macs.
I am sure a lot of FCP users are in the same boat.

It’s there. Select any 1440 monitor with the refresh rate you want. It isn’t the diagonal size that’s important, it’s the resolution in pixels and refresh rate.
